CHAPTER 16

ÁINE

It was perhaps a relief that I had no time to reflect on everything that had just happened in the astrals. I thought remembering what I’d done to Taryn, truly feeling that pain, would set me free. I thought when I’d be back in my body, the world would make sense again, and I’d know exactly what to do and how to feel.

But I didn’t. I was still confused and fractured, even as my severed parts fought to return to wholeness. At least I could see clearer now. At least there was a root of hope in my stomach and a trickle of fight in my blood.

Lucius and I were on the lower level of the castle, near the art gallery.

I reached to touch my lips. When Lucius glanced back at me, I quickly lowered my hand. But I’d been too slow. His own lips held a ghost of a smile.

At the sound of a shout, we were off again. Lucius gripped my hand, and we teleported closer.

In a wide hall, witches were running from the grandest library in the castle on our left. Some guards had charmed weapons at the ready, while others channeled pure power of various frequencies. I saw Nathaniel channel fire, his eyes flashing flames as he took notice of us.

“What is it?” Lucius asked, just as something else exited the library.

Many somethings, actually. I took an instinctive step back, and Lucius stepped in front of me.

Demons. Actual demons that reeked of hellfire and rotting flesh. One of them was black and three-headed with eyes covering each face in place of any other feature. Its skin looked inky and slimy, and it radiated power. Another was more reptilian and winged, its red skin mottled as if horribly burnt. It swung ropes of fire from its claw-like hands. The others were just as grotesque, a macabre menagerie of fierce creatures with hideous deformities, each one more revolting than the last. Then other guards arrived, and all hell broke loose, literally.

The fire demon sent a guard crashing through the windows to the gardens. The one with a hundred eyes was hurling death magick at a few guards that held glowing red swords and chanted blocking spells. More guards quickly surrounded us.

“Damn crumbling dimensions,” I muttered under my breath. I channeled, grateful that despite my exhausted, hungry state the power rushed forward easily. When bright light gathered in my palms, the demons all paused.

Then I realized my mistake. Suddenly, all one hundred demon eyes were on me. More demons poured into the hall, and it was clear what they wanted.

Lucius turned. “Don’t you dare.”

I winked at him and teleported to the middle of the fray. One demon swiped a talon, a long, forked tongue reaching for me. I manifested a sword of light and cut its tongue clean off. It unleashed a horrible wailing sound, and soon shadow magick began to pour from its mouth in a plume of smoke.

One whiff of it and I paused, a deep hopelessness filling my chest that extinguished all of my light.
